Asia Solar Stocks Surge on Strong Demand Hopes

Asian solar stocks on Thursday echoed a rally by their U.S. peers, with some surging as much as 20 percent on signs that prices for solar energy components are stabilizing.

Most solar stocks retreated by more than 60 percent last year as prices for panels that convert sunlight into electricity fell sharply, erasing profit margins for manufacturers.

The global rally came as investors cheered figures showing a dramatic rise in new solar installations in Germany in the fourth quarter and higher prices for polysilicon, a key raw material.

Dec 15, 2011 – Siemens Energy has received another large order to build an offshore wind power plant in Germany. For the Amrumbank West project in the North Sea, the company is supplying 80 wind turbines, each with an output of 3.6 megawatts (MW) and 120 meter diameter rotor. The customer is Amrumbank West GmbH, a subsidiary of E.ON AG. With an installed capacity of 288 MW, this wind power plant will deliver clean energy for around 300,000 households when it goes online in 2015. This is Siemens’ seventh German order for offshore wind turbines.

“With contracts signed for around 440 offshore wind turbines with a total installed capacity of approximately 1,600 MW, Siemens is the clear number one in offshore wind energy utilization in Germany” said Felix Ferlemann, CEO of Siemens Energy’s Wind Power Division. “Our offshore technology will play a substantial role in building up a clean electricity supply in Germany.” Wind turbines of type SWT-3.6-120 are currently the most successful product in Siemens`offshore wind power plants. Among other projects, 175 of these generators are being installed in the London Array, the world’s largest offshore wind power plant.

The Amrumbank West offshore wind park site is around 35 km north of the island of Helgoland and 37 km west of the island of Amrum. Siemens will deliver, install, and commission the wind turbines, and handle maintenance for an initial period of five years. Helgoland will serve as the service base, and the turbines will be installed over an area of 32 square kilometers at a water depth of around 25 meters.

In five years time offshore wind power plants will already account for approximately 20 percent of the entire wind power market. In Europe alone, Siemens is anticipating offshore wind power generating facilities with an installed capacity of more than 80 GW by 2030. That is equivalent to approximately more than half of the power plant fleet currently installed in Germany.

Wind power is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2011, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about €30 billion, making Siemens one of the world’s largest suppliers of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (COB2B) emissions by nearly 320 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual COB2 Bemissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo.

Dec 12, 2011 – The international United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Durban concluded after generating mostly hot air! The expression we hear many times with the politicians with regard to fixing the economy is that they are kicking the can down the road. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol is being extended for several years instead of being replaced. The terms of any replacement agreement will be negotiated in the future. There was agreement to develop a fund, the Green Climate Fund, for poor countries, but the details will be decided in the future. Please leave your comments here.

Dec 7, 2011 – United Solar, the global manufacturer of UNI-SOLAR® lightweight, flexible solar modules and a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD) (Nasdaq:ENER) announced today that Baker Renewable Energy has completed the installation of a 2.6 megawatt (MW) system containing its photovoltaic laminates on the roof of Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner jet assembly plant located in North Charleston, South Carolina.

“We are very pleased with the results of the project. The design, installation and commissioning of the system went as planned. We are very proud of the team effort put in by SCANA and Baker Renewable Energy to execute this for Boeing,” said Jason Epstein, Executive Vice President of Baker Renewable Energy.

As one of the largest rooftop solar installations in the United States, the 2.6 MW project is expected to offset both a significant percentage of the building usage and 3,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. In addition, the energy generation is projected to be over 3,950 MWh per year and is enough to supply power to nearly 870 homes. The assembly plant was operational this past July and the first 787 Dreamliner to be built there will take flight in mid 2012.

“United Solar is proud to have been selected by Baker Renewable Energy for this 2.6 MW rooftop installation, highlighting Boeing’s commitment to clean, renewable solar energy,” said Julian Hawkins, President and Chief Executive Officer of ECD, parent company of United Solar. ”UNI-SOLAR PV laminates are engineered to be building-integrated, ultra-lightweight and non-reflective making them ideally suited for large buildings around airports where low profile, lightweight, and low glare solar solutions are needed. The Baker Renewable Energy team has done a world class job bonding our laminates to Boeing’s membrane roof and executing on this project.”

Dec 1, 2011 – David R. Baker reported recently in the San Francisco Chronicle, “California’s increasing use of renewable power will come at a price, pushing up electricity bills across the state.

And while it’s impossible to tell how big the cost to consumers will be, some experts fear the total cost of renewable energy in California will be in the billions of dollars.

In the next three years, many long-planned solar plants and wind farms will come online, bringing California closer to its goal of getting one-third of the state’s electricity from renewable sources by 2020. As soon as they start delivering power to utility companies, the utilities’ customers will start paying for that electricity.

But the public doesn’t get to see the prices the utilities are paying. And without that information, assessing the impact on consumers is difficult at best.
