July 27, 2010 – Tyler Kepner reports in The New York Times on the famous Fenway Park Citgo sign. “Federal Heath Sign Company began the process of replacing more than 9,000 feet of lights on the double-sided, 60-by-60-foot Boston landmark, which first said “Cities Service” when it was installed above 660 Beacon Street in 1940. LED lights replaced neon when the sign was last updated in 2004, and the new lights are said to be far more advanced.

“The lights will be a little bit more vibrant, because the technology has changed and it was kind of hard to keep up with it,” Foley said. “The old LEDs weren’t working right anymore, and some of them were discontinued, so they had a problem. That’s why they’re doing it all over. Every LED is going to be changed.”

The sign is usually dark only from midnight to 6 a.m. The lights turn off when it is sunny but sometimes stay on all day in overcast weather. The new sign will use less energy, and Foley said he would now have to manage only 32 circuit-breakers, about a third of the old total.” Read the whole story in The New York Times.

According to accident lawyer, William D. Kickham in Boston, an unexpected consequence of electric vehicles is accidents with pedestrians at slow speeds. We are used to the noise of internal combustion. Electric and hybrid vehicles make little or no noise at speeds under 15 mph. Hybrid vehicles’ gasoline engines start at 15 mph.

Most accidents with hybrid or electric vehicles happen when cars have been stopped at intersections or moving slowly in parking lots, a great many of them will likely involve pedestrians. William D. Kickman, Esq. says “By the way: Don’t be fooled into thinking that a pedestrian can’t be hurt that badly by a motor vehicle traveling at 15 MPH or less. Trust me: A person can be killed or seriously injured when hit by a car traveling at even 10 MPH. I’ve seen it before: Horrific injuries involving paralysis, even death.”

Manufacturers are thinking about adding chimes or fake engine noise to reduce these types of accidents.

Today Congress voted to extend unemployment benefits. However, North Dakota and Alaska are the only states that have created jobs since the beginning of the recession. Most of these jobs are government ones, both federal and local.

Some of the jobs in these states are green. Hybrid diesel-electric buses are produced by the Motor Coach Industries plant in Pembina, North Dakota. This project created hundreds of green jobs for engineers, plant workers, bus drivers, and others.

According to the Sierra Club, North Dakota ranks number ten in wind power capacity but number one in wind power potential. The climate is excellent for wind power generation.

Alaska has a lot of potential for alternative energy generation with its windy coasts, untapped rivers and huge tidal and wave resources. Alaska can quickly become a national leader in producing alternative energy.

With good job growth and green job potential, North Dakota and Alaska are two good states for green jobs.
