July 28, 2010 – Schneider Electric of France is running 2-page ads headlined, “A watt saved is a watt shared.” Schneider helps companies around the world save energies in the buildings and processes. Saving energy provides the quickest return on investment compared to developing new sources of energy. It also makes use of current technology and does not depend on technological breakthroughs. Their ad is full of important and intelligent information and doesn’t just tout their achievements as many other ads do for their corporate advertisers. Interesting, they have a chart plotting “per capita income versus energy use around the world.” Canada noses out the USA in energy use despite having a lower per capita income. On the chart, the lowest per capita incomes with the least energy use are Argentina, Brazil and China. That will not last for many years and may not even be accurate today as the data are from 2006 and Brazil and China have been growing rapidly. Check out their free resources at http://www.Schneider-Electric.com/share and http://www.Schneider-Electric.com/EnergyUniversity. Then come back to GreenEnergyForEarth.com and leave your comments.

July 27, 2010 – Tyler Kepner reports in The New York Times on the famous Fenway Park Citgo sign. “Federal Heath Sign Company began the process of replacing more than 9,000 feet of lights on the double-sided, 60-by-60-foot Boston landmark, which first said “Cities Service” when it was installed above 660 Beacon Street in 1940. LED lights replaced neon when the sign was last updated in 2004, and the new lights are said to be far more advanced.

“The lights will be a little bit more vibrant, because the technology has changed and it was kind of hard to keep up with it,” Foley said. “The old LEDs weren’t working right anymore, and some of them were discontinued, so they had a problem. That’s why they’re doing it all over. Every LED is going to be changed.”

The sign is usually dark only from midnight to 6 a.m. The lights turn off when it is sunny but sometimes stay on all day in overcast weather. The new sign will use less energy, and Foley said he would now have to manage only 32 circuit-breakers, about a third of the old total.” Read the whole story in The New York Times.

According to accident lawyer, William D. Kickham in Boston, an unexpected consequence of electric vehicles is accidents with pedestrians at slow speeds. We are used to the noise of internal combustion. Electric and hybrid vehicles make little or no noise at speeds under 15 mph. Hybrid vehicles’ gasoline engines start at 15 mph.

Most accidents with hybrid or electric vehicles happen when cars have been stopped at intersections or moving slowly in parking lots, a great many of them will likely involve pedestrians. William D. Kickman, Esq. says “By the way: Don’t be fooled into thinking that a pedestrian can’t be hurt that badly by a motor vehicle traveling at 15 MPH or less. Trust me: A person can be killed or seriously injured when hit by a car traveling at even 10 MPH. I’ve seen it before: Horrific injuries involving paralysis, even death.”

Manufacturers are thinking about adding chimes or fake engine noise to reduce these types of accidents.

July 19, 2010 – Lightbulbs out, LEDs on! Diodes the size of pinheads are developing into the light source of the 21st century – and with them Audi is leaving everyone else in its shadow. Seventy-six LED chips in each headlight of the new Audi A8 point the way to a brighter future.

The high-end solution on board the new A8 is the full LED headlights. They give the big sedan an unmistakable appearance even in daylight and even more so after the fall of darkness. Their revolutionary optics mean a departure from the large, tubular light modules commonly used today.

The low beams comprise ten individual modules forming an arc situated below the wing-shaped chrome contour known as the “wing.” Just below this is another arc of 22 white and 22 yellow LEDs for the daytime running lights and the turn signals. Their thick wall technology makes them appear from the outside as homogenous, continuous strips of light.

Located above the wing are the high beams, whose light is generated by two powerful four-chip LEDs and a free surface reflector system. An assistant switches between the high and low beams, and additional high-power LEDs generate the highway light and cornering light. A separate fan and heat sink moderate the system’s temperature.

The full LED headlights offer a number of functional advantages in everyday situations. With a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin, their light resembles daylight and thus is much less tiring to the eyes. They also offer efficiency advantages. The low beams, for example, consume only 40 watts per unit, a bit less than the already highly efficient xenon plus headlights.

The side view of the new Audi A8 also gives the image of concentrated and forward-thrusting power. Typically for the Audi line, the vehicle line makes up two-thirds of the height, with the remaining third falling to the greenhouse. From the single-frame grill Audi’s characteristic Tornado line runs as a light edge just beneath the window sill. The line continues close above the wheel arches, giving the A8 a powerful appearance on the road.

The surfaces below the Tornado line interpret the interplay of light and shadow, of convexity and concavity, and are statement of seriousness and timeless elegance. Proceeding downwards, the surfaces are framed by the rising dynamic line running above the side sills. Large wheels – from 17 to 21 inches in diameter – fill the wheel arches pulled out wide.

At the rear the separation edge gives an impression of sleekness, which further reinforces the impressively sculptured surfaces. A chrome strip underlines the width of the sedan, terminating in a diffuser.

The tail lights also produce an appearance both three-dimensional and striking – and typically Audi. They, too, use LED technology with 72 light-emitting diodes per unit. Chip-on-board LEDs, which can be packed tightly together with high precision, are used in many areas due to the limited amount of space available.

The tail lights, which consume only 9 watts per unit, form a trapezoidal contour that appears as an even, homogenous strip. Its upper segment is a light guide – a plastic tube; the lower section is a reflective, textured free-form surface. It is thicker than the upper segment to optically lower the center of gravity of the A8’s back end. The turn signal is a horizontal line. The five-segment brake light is located inside the trapezoid.

Please leave your comments here. Do you think this technology will be available soon on cars from VW, which owns Audi?

July 19, 2010 – We keep hearing about the Prius and Tesla. But, what car earned the title, “Green Car of The Year.” AUDI. Green and performance luxury needn’t be mutually exclusive concepts. That’s a core belief at Audi. oday, that philosophy paid off with the all-new A3 TDI® earning the prestigious title of 2010 Green Car of the Year®.

The announcement came during the Los Angeles Auto Show as Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com presented the award to Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen. The Audi A3 TDI® was among 5 model finalists nominated for the award, which began in 2005.

The 2010 Audi A3 TDI® at U.S. dealerships recently and initial sales have been promising. The A3 TDI® is the latest example of the fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions benefits provided by the critically acclaimed TDI® clean diesel product line, following the wildly popular Q7 TDI®, which launched in June 2009. TDI® clean diesel technology was first developed by Audi 20 years ago and has come to signify the brand’s commitment to trailblazing automotive performance executed in an environmentally responsible way.

The groundbreaking TDI® 2.0 engine available in the A3 delivers 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, yet achieves an EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway fuel economy that is the best of any luxury car sold in America. That means the Audi A3 TDI® achieve 50% better fuel economy than a comparable gasoline engine.

“We consider the Green Car of the Year® title one of the most important industry accolades,“ said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “It is of paramount importance for us to develop vehicles that achieve the very touchstones this award stands for – fuel efficiency and environmental impact. Rather than novelty features, we consider these attributes imperative to the future of automobile design. We are honored with this recognition for the Audi A3 TDI®.”

In addition to setting the new industry standard in fuel efficiency, the 2010 A3 TDI® remains a stylistic pacesetter as well. All new A3 models now come standard with S line exterior equipment. In addition the wheels have been upgraded and standard Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights are available on Premium Plus models.

“The Audi A3 TDI® really defines what a ‘green’ car should be,” said Cogan. “At 42 mpg, it sets the bar for highway fuel efficiency in the luxury car segment. Its 50-state certified clean diesel engine is quiet, responsive, and achieves its mission without the need for exotic technologies. Plus, it’s sporty and just plain fun to drive.”

Indeed, the TDI® technology in the A3 has a strong performance heritage. Audi was the first automaker to find success with diesel engines in motorsports, winning several times at the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring, among other competitions. That same fundamental technology is found in the A3 TDI®, meaning motorists do not have to sacrifice performance for efficiency.
