“We are very pleased with the results of the project. The design, installation and commissioning of the system went as planned. We are very proud of the team effort put in by SCANA and Baker Renewable Energy to execute this for Boeing,” said Jason Epstein, Executive Vice President of Baker Renewable Energy.

As one of the largest rooftop solar installations in the United States, the 2.6 MW project is expected to offset both a significant percentage of the building usage and 3,660 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. In addition, the energy generation is projected to be over 3,950 MWh per year and is enough to supply power to nearly 870 homes. The assembly plant was operational this past July and the first 787 Dreamliner to be built there will take flight in mid 2012.

There are about 200  such programs in California, but only 3 in Florida and Lantana’s is the first in Palm Beach County.

The new Business Unit EMEA will be headed by Jan Kjaersgaard, who was to date responsible for Siemens’ wind power business in the Amercias. Mark Albenze will be appointed CEO of the Business Unit responsible for the Americas headquartered in Orlando, Florida. He has been working at Siemens for Siemens Energy Inc. in Denver, USA, and was to date Vice President Power Systems Sales. Kay Weber will head the local Business Unit for the Region Asia-Pacific headquartered in Shanghai, China. He has been with Siemens for 20 years and was previously responsible for the Energy Service business for the Region Asia-Pacific. Wolfgang Hermann, to date CFO of the Siemens Industry Solution Division, will be appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Wind Power Division.

The prospects for wind power are very good. It is anticipated that the world market will increase from approximately EUR42 billion per annum in 2010 to around EUR60 billion in 2016. The onshore market is expected to increase from 38 gigawatts (GW) to 45 GW per annum. At the same time, offshore wind farms are also gaining in importance and are expected to show an annual increase from 3 GW to 11 GW. In five years time offshore wind power plants will already account for approximately 20 percent of the entire wind power market. In Europe alone, Siemens is anticipating offshore wind power generating facilities with an installed capacity of more than 80 GW by 2030. That is equivalent to approximately more than half of the power plant fleet currently installed in Germany. Of these 80 GW only six percent have currently been developed. The company also wants to post significant growth with onshore wind farms, which already account for over 60 percent of Siemens’ global wind power business.

The wind business has been expanded significantly since Siemens acquired the Danish wind turbine manufacturer Bonus Energy in 2004. The work force has in the meantime increased almost ten-fold from 800 to approximately 7800 and revenue has even risen twelve-fold to approximately EUR3,2 billion. Today, Siemens Wind Power has seven manufacturing facilities in three countries. It is anticipated that in three years time there will be as many as twelve production plants in eight countries.

Wind power is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2010, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR28 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 270 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of the megacities Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore.

There remains vast potential to expand such large-scale solar development to help New Jersey achieve its energy and economic goals. Landfills are a prime example. New Jersey has some 850 landfills, many of which could be given a new, green and productive purpose as the location for solar facilities. An important first step is being taken in the Meadowlands through a project that will transform a closed landfill into a three-megawatt solar farm. The project is a joint effort  between the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, SunDurance Energy and PSE&G. The solar arm is to be placed in service before year’s end. Turning landfills green with solar power can produce a rich, growing harvest of jobs and clean energy, to the lasting benefit of New Jersey and  its residents.
