San Diego Gas and Electric To Add 300 MW of Renewable Energy

San Diego Gas & Electric has jumped into its first new renewable energy contracts of 2012 with commitments to purchase a combined 300 MW from two new projects.

SDG&E, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy,  said Thursday it has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with both Iberdrola Renewables, Inc. and 8minuteenergy Renewables.

Under the terms of the 20-year contract with Iberdrola Renewables, Inc., SDG&E will purchase 100 MW from the 189 MW Manzana Wind project being developed near Rosamond, California. The wind farm which is slated to be complete by the end of 2012 will be comprised of 126 wind turbines spanning 4,600 acres.

With 8minuteenergy, SDG&E signed a 25-year PPA for the purchase of 200 MW of energy from the Mount Signal Solar project being developed in Imperial Valley, CA. The photovoltaic solar farm, which is being jointly developed by AES Solar, is expected to bring its first 100 MW online by mid-2013 and be fully operational by late 2013.

Both contracts have to be approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Last month the CPUC approved SDG&E’s 20-year PPA with Pattern Energy to purchase the electricity produced by the 315 MW Ocotillo Wind Energy Facility being developed in Imperial Valley.

“We are well on our way toward meeting the California’s goal and attaining 33 percent of our power from renewable sources in 2020,” said James P. Avery, senior vice president of power supply for SDG&E.

This announcement continues Sempra Energy’s march into renewable energy proliferation. Four weeks ago Sempra Energy and BP plc announced plans to make a combined investment of $1 billion dollars to develop two wind farms that will combine to generate 560 MW.
