“Generous subsidies for solar panels are to be cut in half in December, but energy campaigners are hoping to convince homeowners that there is still money to be made from generating their own electricity.
In April 2010, the government introduced feed-in tariffs (FiTs) – payments to households and companies that generated their own energy – to encourage the installation of renewable energy technology.
But the scheme has been a victim of its own success. Despite announcing that the tariff would remain unchanged until April 2012, the government has decided to cut it from December 12 this year, saying that the costs have become too high.
With the cost of solar panels falling by close to a third in the past 18 months, to about £11,500 for a 2.5kW solar PV panel system unit, the government says that the returns homeowners can generate have become more profitable than the scheme intended.”
