Unintended Consequences: Dangerous Hybrids
Sept 30, 2009 – Diane C. Lade writes, “Hybrids Often So Quiet They Can Be Dangerous” in the Florida Sun-Sentinel. They are “significantly” more likely to be involved I accidents with cyclists and pedestrians who don’t hear their quiet engines. Earlier this year I spend a day in a friend’s Prius. The only noises are the radio and the talking of the occupants. The article quotes a study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that reports that hybrid vechicles that were turning, slowing or backing up were TWICE as likely to crash with pedestrians.
