Energy-Conservation Tax Breaks

Apr 23, 2009 – Even The Costco Connection [April 2009] is getting into the act so they can help sell more products to their members [Disclosure: I am an Executive Member and Costco shareholder.]  It states, “This may be the time to consider buying a new furnace or air conditioner, replacing drafty windows, putting in attic insulation and/or installing solar panels.  The new economic recovery package includes more than $50 billion in energy-related grants, tax breaks and loan guarantees to spur solar and wind energy developments and to cut energy use in businesses, schools, government and homes.”  Unfortunately, I believe a large proportion of the money will not be utilized because too much is allocated to tax incentives, which are less helpful in the current recession, as compared to outright grants.  Tax incentives are too dependent on individual tax situation of the business or home owner.  If you have lost your job or are in danger of doing so, you are not about to buy a more efficient air conditioner or install solar heating for the tax advantage, which could be very small.
