Electric Car May Get Tax Break in Florida
Mar 10, 2009 – Josh Hafenbrack writes in the “Electric car may receive tax break” in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, that the Florida Legislature is considering legislation to give tax breaks for electric vehicles in the Sunshine State. House Majority Leader Adam Hasner [R] of Boca Raton wants to give a sales tax exemption to buyers of battery-powered electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, and provide $200,000 in incentives to build 100 charging stations throughout Florida. Currently, there are only 100 electric vehicles [EVs] in all of Florida. This can help sales of the Chevy Volt coming in late 2010 and others announced by Toyota and Ford. These savings [6% sales tax] combined with $7,500 federal tax credit may help stimulate sales of these EVs, but, of course, as with any product, the ability to meet customers’ needs is what will determine success. Tax credits for a car that doesn’t travel far enough won’t make it a success. What good
is driving 40 miles to a charging station? There better be a Starbucks next to it with free wireless internet service to occupy you for a couple of hours during the recharge. How long will it take Rep. Hasner to go the 440 miles from Boca Raton to his office in Tallahassee?
Please leave your comments on how successful this will be.
