Clouds Over Solar; Calm Days Ahead for Wind Farms

Dark Days for Green Energy [Don't we always like catchy titles?] There is a global recession ongoing with some folks predicting a depr___ion [no dirty words here]. The housing industry debacle and job losses have knocked residential solar installations down. Tax credits don’t help if you don’t have income to offset. If you do have money, take advantage of the recent 25% price reductions on solar panels in the last 6 months [part of this might be due to slower demand and part due to manufacturing efficiencies.] The housing mess has caused turmoil in the financial industry and they are the institutions that provide the financing for commercial solar and wind installations. Previously, 18 major banks were lending to green energy manufacturers and installers. That has dropped to 4 and you can be sure that they are being more restrictive in their loan policy. Wind farms typically require 50% financing for a project. In 2008, several corn-to-ethanol producers went bankrupt. “Solar energy companies like OptiSolar, Ausra, HelioVolt and SunPower, once darlings of investors, have all had to lay off workers.”
Investors, manufacturers, installers, employees, customers and politicians are all hoping that President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan in conjunction with the extended green energy tax incentives and Obama’s emphasis on renewable energy will result in the long term brightening of the prospects for the industry.
