Green Ads Continued: JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Jan 6, 2009 – Reading all the congratulatory green ads in the media one would think that all energy produced was from renewable, green energy. Today, JPMorgan Chase [NYSE: JPM] published a full page ad that stated titled, “WE’RE INVESTING BILLIONS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY TODAY, FOR A BETTER TOMORROW.” It followed with, “Our goal? To help America achieve a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future.” One can assume their clients and investors are most interested in the latter. They claim that they have invested over $2 billion of its own capital “to fund renewable energy products including wind farms and solar facilities across 17 states”. It doesn’t state the time period over which that money was invested: 1 year, the last 10 years, forever? It also doesn’t mention what other renewables are included in the $2 billion. There is a hint in the next paragraph when it states that JPMorgan has been a leading investor in wind power since 2003 ["helped to build 54 wind farms - enough to generate electricity to power 1.5 million homes."]; thus, the investments probably have been spread out over at least 5 years. Nevertheless, it is nice to know that JPM is “committed to continued investments in this area.”  I they just positioning themselves for the coming stimulus package of President-elect Barack Obama.
