DISNEY MEETINGS AND GREEN RESORTS
Walt Disney’s passion for the environment started over 50 years ago with the introduction of Disney’s True Life Adventure Series. At Disney Parks and Resorts, including Walt Disney World Resort, conservation is part of the company to inspire Cast Members and guests to conserve and take action and make use of resources. To Disney, “Environmentality” refers to the preservation of natural resources and the environment. It represents the commitment and attitude to do what is right. At the Disney Meetings, environmentality efforts are supported in several key areas such as Energy and Water conservation, Food & Beverage/Catering, Walt Disney Florist, Walt Disney World-Energy Conservation, Wildlife and wildlife habitat conservation.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issues the Florida Certified Green Lodges certification to nine resorts at Walt Disney World which conserve energy, water and natural resources, improved indoor air quality, low-flow shower heads in guest rooms, energy-efficient appliances, recycling programs and employee training. A total of 36 designated hotels have been issued this certification in the State of Florida. Walt Disney World promotes providing recycling bins in every guest room and room keys are recycled each year.
There are automatic lights and CO2 sensors in the convention centers. In-house recycling is also available for groups upon request. The Disney Harvest program considers the materials and products that are purchased and how they effect the environment. Sustainable foods and wise purchasing practices and menu creation are used. The cooking oil used at Walt Disney World is recycled into biofuel, which is used by local companies.
The WDE Floral team uses vases and containers from reusable glass and plastic. Wedding flowers are used for the ceremony and the reception for economic and environmental considerations. Floral boxes are recycled daily. The “VeriFlora” seal of approval has been given to over 70% of the floral vendors.
Monitoring energy and water throughout the Walt Disney World Resort is their main focus for energy conservation. Water is reclaimed and used in irrigation systems every day. WDW has received the EPA’s “Energy Star Partner” designation because of its constant efforts.
Inspired from the foundation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park, Disney’s Wildlife Conservation Fund helps guest and Cast Members to contribute to the protection of endangered species worldwide. This fund was started in 1998 and since then over $8.5 million has been awarded.
