Lithium Battery Alliance
Dec 29, 2008 – Chemical & Engineering News reports in its December 22, 2008 issue that the Argonne National Laboratory has joined with 3M, FMC and a group of smaller companies to establish an alliance to develop a US base for manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for transportation applications. The coalition wants to build a prototype and manufacturing center over the next 5 years at a cost of $1 to 2 billion. The alliance is determined to help the US catch up to Asia in developing battery technology. Alan Elsahfei, CEO of alliance member MicroSun Technologies says, “For 20 years, the US has sat idly and watched foreign markets become the leaders in lithium-ion technology.” However, over the last few decades, we have all seen many technologies that are developed in the US that migrate to Asia for production for the simple reason that high quality products can be made there cheaper than in the US. Do you think the same will happen with lithium-ion batteries? Please make your comments and check back to see comments from other readers.

lithium batteries are very expensive but they are very lightweight-“
