Wind Taken Out of Sails of California Renewable Energy Propositions

Nov 5, 2008 – Two important green initiatives were among the many propositions on the ballot yesterday in California. Both went down to defeat. Voters rejected Proposition 7 that would have required utilities in the state to generate 50% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025. Market forces may result in this target being met without the proposition requiring it. Green energy makes sense and will continue to make gains. The push to pass this proposition was mostly funded by Arizona billionaire Peter Sperling, son of the founder of private University of Phoenix. Voters also rejected Proposition 10 that would have authorized $5 billion in state bonds for research and the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles. This Proposition’s largest proponent was T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire wind energy proponent & oilman.
