University of Rochester: Sustainability

Now universities are taking out ads touting their sustainability activities. And as usual there are wind turbines in the picture. I drove about 2,000 miles on a vacation trip around the Midwest this spring and didn’t see one wind turbine. The last wind tower I actually saw was in Holland; it was a centuries old windmill. I did a search on the University of Rochester [UR] website for “wind” and got hits for the university “wind ensemble”!

UR is providing 1,140 freshmen with compact fluorescent lights for their desk lamps. No mention of replacing bulbs throughout UR. 4 Zipcars will be on campus. UR website headline is “Wind Energy Powers Residential Buildings on River Campus.” BUT, actually the buildings are not hooked up to wind turbine electricity; rather, UR has purchase renewable energy credits {RECs] to offset the actual traditional electricity that the buildings are using.

Hopefully, UR will have more efforts coming.
