Hurricane Gustav Aims for Gulf Coast Oil Rigs

Aug 30, 2008 – This morning’s US National Hurricane Center Report: DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE CONTINUED TO INCREASE AND ARE NOW NEAR 120
MPH
195 KM/HR …WITH HIGHER GUSTS. GUSTAV IS A DANGEROUS
CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE.
GUSTAV IS EXPECTED TO PASS OVER WESTERN CUBA AS A MAJOR HURRICANE…AND COULD REACH CATEGORY 4 STATUS BEFORE MAKING
LANDFALL THERE. ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE OVER THE
SOUTHERN GULF OF MEXICO.

Current projections have Gustav on track towards landfall at New Orleans Tuesday at 2 AM. Of course, the NHC updates these projections several times a day and hurricanes are notorious for taking their own paths despite the best made human and computer predictions. There are many oil rigs along the Gulf coast along Louisiana and Texas in the projected path as well as numerous refineries and natural gas sources. Companies are taking precautionary measures now.
