Geoffrey Ballard, 75, Fuel-Cell Pioneer Died
Aug 12, 2008 – Jeremy Pearce, The New York Times, “Geoffrey Ballard, 75, Fuel-Cell Pioneer Who Created Bus Powered by Hydrogen.” Dr. Ballard, who died on Aug. 2, was the founder of Ballard Power Systems of Burnaby, BC, Canada, which produced a small bus in 1993 that was powered completely by hydrogen and only produced water as a byproduct. He left Ballard Power Systems in the late 1990s and helped form General Hydrogen [owned by Plug Power as of 2007] of Vancouver, BC. The latter firm promoted the use of fuel cells in warehouse forklifts and other vehicles. Dr. Ballard was a pioneer in the use of hydrogen powered fuel cells.
