Pickens Plan Stirs Debate and Qualms

Aug 5, 2008 – Kate Galbraith in The New York Times reports “Pickens Plan Stirs Debate and Qualms.” Pickens has committed $58 million to promoting wind energy and natural gas for powering cars to reduce the US reliance on imported oil. He is a major investor in firms that do just that. Large industrial users of natural gas are concerned about price increases if it is used in powering cars. There is a lack of natural gas fuel pumps. That coupled with the limited range of such vehicles has primarily restricted their use in the US to local fleets. Argentina uses natural gas for about 20% of its vehicles. Pickens asserts wind energy would free up natural gas from other uses. The Energy Department says the US could get 20% of its energy need from wind by 2030 instead of the 1% now.
